Unpacking the Innovation Paradox

8 February 2026

On February 7, 2026 I delivered a keynote address at the South Asia Finale of Global Sustainability Challenge at IIT Bombay. The conversations that followed, suggested a deeper reflection may be timely. Hence this post.

Innovation has always been double-edged. The future will not judge us by how fast we innovated… but by how wisely we anticipated consequences.

What distinguishes this era is not merely the velocity of invention, but the depth of its reach into ecological systems, labour markets, geopolitical alignments, and even the terms of our social contract.

Innovation Solves Problems — but unfortunately could manufactures Tomorrow’s Risks

Consider the clean energy transition. Widely framed as humanity’s pathway out of climate instability, it is simultaneously becoming a mining transition intensifying demand for critical minerals, expanding extractive frontiers, and introducing new geopolitical dependencies.

Elsewhere, well-intended energy policies regarding biofuels have collided with food systems, contributing to price volatility when crops were redirected toward fuel.

Even adaptation is not consequence-free. Measures designed to protect some regions can shift vulnerability elsewhere, forcing an ethical question we do not ask often enough: When we protect some, do we expose others?

Our growing dependence on cooling technologies as a measure towards adaptation offers a quieter paradox, responding to heat in ways that risk intensifying the very warming we seek to escape.

These are not arguments against innovation. They are reminders that innovation now operates inside tightly coupled systems, where second-order effects are not anomalies – they are normal.

The Velocity Gap

A structural imbalance is becoming visible:

Technology is accelerating. Capital is becoming more impatient and competitive. Foresight is however not keeping pace.

Financial systems are adept at opportunity for quick returns, yet the externalities of innovation frequently migrate beyond the market into society.

This is not a failure of intent. It reflects how modern markets evolved — to allocate capital faster than institutions can evaluate systemic consequence.

Artificial intelligence makes this imbalance harder to ignore. It is not merely changing how we work but it is altering what it means to be human capital. For perhaps the first time, innovation is competing with cognition.

Just Transitions — and Their Less Discussed Counterpart

Much has rightly been written about the need for a Just Transition as we want to decarbonize.

Yet transitions are not automatically just.

Technological shifts often create what might be called unjust transitions — abrupt displacements that outpace institutional preparedness. Entire skill ecosystems can become obsolete long before reskilling pathways or safety nets arrive.

So the speed of innovation increasingly determines whether transitions are inclusive or extractive.

Which is precisely why consequence must be examined before scale, not after disruption. In sustainability related innovations, we need to unmask and peep into the futures.

A Language Gap in the Innovation Ecosystem

While sustainability governance has matured over decades, the idea of governing innovation itself remains underdeveloped in mainstream startup ecosystems.

In the United States and India, the dominant vocabulary revolves around ESG, responsible investment, climate tech, or responsible AI. Explicit references to innovation governance remain relatively uncommon.

Canada offers a partial exception, with emerging efforts to strengthen governance capabilities in scaling technology enterprises — a signal that the conversation may be beginning to institutionalise innovation governance.

The issue is not geographic leadership.

It is structural.

We have built sophisticated pipelines for accelerating innovation — but far fewer for anticipating its consequences.

We often speak of “the transition” as though it were singular.

It is not.

We are entering an age of simultaneous disruptions – energy systems, material flows, artificial intelligence, climate adaptation, and economic structures are all shifting together.

When disruptions interact, consequences do not add.

They compound.

Toward Innovation Impact Assessment

If innovation is now powerful enough to reshape economies, its consequences cannot remain an afterthought.

What is needed is a more anticipatory discipline – one that combines systems thinking, continuous learning, wider stakeholder visibility, and intelligent use of data to detect emerging risks before they harden into structural problems.

Call this Innovation Impact Assessment.

Not as compliance. Not as a brake on entrepreneurship.

But as structured foresight.

At its core are four deceptively simple questions:

Systems: What existing arrangements will this disrupt?
Resources: What new dependencies will it create?
Society: Who benefits first — and who absorbs the shock?
Time: Which risks reveal themselves only after scale?

Discovery, after all, is not only about invention. It is also about ring-fencing consequences in the innovation design and strategy for implementation and scale up.

The Path Forward: Expanding the Perimeter of Governance

Perhaps, the sustainability transition is itself the largest innovation experiment in human history.

This is why the traditional perimeter of sustainability governance is no longer sufficient.

If innovation now reorganises markets and institutional arrangements at speed, governance must migrate upstream — from managing impacts to anticipating trajectories.

Sustainability governance must therefore evolve into innovation governance.

Not to slow invention. Not to burden risk-taking.

But to widen the aperture of consequence before scale locks systems in.
